A Marking Knife: A Versatile Tool for Woodworkers
Every woodworker's toolbox should include a marking knife, a versatile tool that can produce crisp and well-defined marks on wood, essential for laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. These scribe lines can also serve as guides for chisels and saws. While many marking knives are available on the market, we have had this particular knife made to our own specifications.
This Dual Bevel Spear Point knife is crafted by Mikov, a world-class Czech knife maker. Mikov, currently the largest knife manufacturer in the Czech Republic, has been producing high-quality knives since 1794. The company's wide range of products includes pocket, folding, fixed-blade, hunting, sport, kitchen, and specialty knives, all known for their exceptional quality and affordability.
The blade of this marking knife is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 57. This steel is designed to take and hold a keen edge, while also resisting corrosion – a feature often found in Mikov's kitchen knives. The blade measures 1-7/8 inches in length, 1/2 inch in width, and 0.100 inch in thickness.
The blade features a dual-bevel spear point tip, with each bevel ground to 25 degrees, resulting in a 55-degree angle. This precision grinding is achieved on CNC machines, ensuring consistent and accurate bevels. The laser-cut finger indents on the blade facilitate the application of pressure closer to the tip, enhancing control and precision.
The dual-bevel edge of the knife allows it to mark distinct lines equally well on both the right and left side of a part or guide. This versatility enables the user to leave crisp lines when marking with and against the grain, as well as on end grain. If needed, a light stropping can remove any small wire edge, leaving the knife razor-sharp and ready for use.
The handle of this marking knife is crafted from Mexican Rosewood, which has been hand-sanded and polished to a smooth finish. The scales are attached to the blade using two brass pins, resulting in a sturdy and comfortable grip. The handle's 3/8-inch thickness provides the perfect size for a nimble yet stout marking knife. Its square profile prevents the knife from rolling off the workbench, enhancing stability and control.
In summary, this Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife, made to our specifications by the renowned Czech knife maker Mikov, is a must-have tool for any woodworker. Its high-quality construction, precision features, and versatility make it an invaluable addition to any well-equipped toolbox.
