A marking knife is an essential tool for every woodworker's toolbox. This versatile instrument can create crisp and well-defined marks on wood, making it indispensable when laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. The scribe lines left by a marking knife can also serve as guides for chisels and saws.

While there are many marking knives available on the market, we have had this particular model made to our own specifications. The Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife is manufactured by Mikov, a world-class Czech knife maker. Mikov, currently the largest knife maker in the Czech Republic, has been crafting knives since 1794, producing a wide range of pocket, folding, fixed blade, hunting, sport, kitchen, and specialty knives.

Mikov is renowned for creating high-quality everyday knives using premium materials at very affordable prices, and this marking knife is no exception. The blade is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 57. This steel is designed to take and hold a keen edge, while also resisting corrosion. The blade measures 1-7/8 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, and 0.100 inch thick, with a dual-bevel spear point tip.

The tip is ground to 55 degrees, with a 25-degree grind on both bevels. This precision grinding, done on CNC machines, ensures that the dual-bevel edge will mark distinct lines equally well on both the right and left side of a part or guide. The knife can leave crisp lines when marking with and against the grain, as well as on end grain. A light stropping may be all that's needed to remove a small wire edge and restore the razor-sharp edge.

The handle of this marking knife is made from Mexican Rosewood, which has been hand-sanded and polished. The scales are attached to the blade using two brass pins, resulting in a handle that provides the perfect size and grip for a nimble yet stout marking tool. The square handle profile also prevents the knife from rolling off the bench.
