Every woodworker's toolbox should include a marking knife, an invaluable tool. A good marking knife can produce crisp, well-defined marks on wood, essential for laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. The scribe lines left by a marking knife can also locate and guide chisels and saws.
Although numerous well-made marking knives are available, we have commissioned this marking knife to our own specifications. This Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife was made by Mikov, a world-class Czech knife maker. Mikov is currently the largest knife maker in the Czech Republic and has been crafting knives since 1794. The company offers a wide range of pocket, folding, fixed blade, hunting, sport, kitchen, and specialty knives, renowned for their high quality and affordable prices.
The blade of this marking knife is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 57. This is the same steel used in many of Mikov's kitchen knives, designed to take and hold a keen edge while resisting corrosion. The blade measures 5-7/8 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, and 0.060 inch thick, with a dual-bevel spear point tip. The tip is ground to 55 degrees, with a 25-degree angle grind on both bevels, precisely machined on CNC equipment.
The laser-cut finger indents on the blade allow for better control and pressure application near the tip. The dual-bevel design ensures distinct, crisp lines can be marked equally well on both the right and left side of a workpiece or guide. This versatility allows for precise markings with the grain, against the grain, and on end grain.
While the knife may require light stropping to remove a small wire edge, this simple step will restore its razor-sharp edge, making it ready for use. The knife can be used as-is, without a handle, or users can attach wood scales to create a custom handle. If a handle is desired, the kit includes two brass pins to securely affix the scales to the blade.
In summary, this unhandled Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife, made to our specifications by the renowned Mikov knife maker, is an exceptional tool for any woodworker's arsenal. Its precision-engineered blade, dual-bevel design, and versatility in marking make it an invaluable addition to the workshop.
