A marking knife is an essential tool in the toolbox of every woodworker. This versatile instrument can produce crisp and well-defined marks on wood, crucial for laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. The scribe lines left by a marking knife can also guide the placement of chisels and saws.
While many marking knives are available on the market, this particular knife was custom-made to our specifications. It was crafted by Mikov, a world-renowned knife maker from the Czech Republic. Mikov is currently the largest knife manufacturer in the country and has been in the business since 1794.
The blade of this Dual Bevel Spear Point knife is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to an HRC (Rockwell Hardness) of 57. This steel is designed to maintain a keen edge and resist corrosion, ensuring the knife's longevity. The blade measures 1-7/8 inches in length, 1/2 inch in width, and 0.060 inch in thickness.
The blade features a dual-bevel spear point tip, with each bevel ground to 25 degrees, resulting in a 55-degree angle at the tip. This precise grinding, done on CNC machines, allows the knife to leave crisp lines when marking with or against the grain, as well as on end grain. The laser-cut finger indents on the blade facilitate the application of pressure closer to the tip, enhancing control and precision.
The versatility of this marking knife is evident in its ability to make marks in narrow recesses, such as when transferring pin and tail marks during dovetailing. The dual-bevel design ensures that the knife can leave distinct lines on both the right and left sides of a part or guide, making it an invaluable tool for woodworkers.
The handle of this knife is crafted from Mexican Rosewood, which has been hand-sanded and polished to a smooth finish. The scales are attached to the blade using two brass pins, providing a secure and durable connection. The 3/8-inch-thick handle offers the perfect size and balance for a nimble yet sturdy marking knife, with the square profile preventing the knife from rolling off the bench.
In summary, this Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife, crafted by the renowned Mikov knife maker, is a versatile and high-quality tool that should be in the arsenal of every serious woodworker. Its precision-engineered blade, coupled with the ergonomic and durable handle, make it an invaluable addition to any workshop.
