A marking knife is an essential tool that every woodworker should have in their toolbox. This versatile instrument can produce crisp and well-defined marks on wood, which are crucial when laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. The scribe lines left by a marking knife can also serve as a guide for chisels and saws.
While there are numerous well-made marking knives available, we have commissioned this particular model to meet our specifications. This Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife was crafted by Mikov, a world-class knife maker based in the Czech Republic. Mikov is currently the largest knife manufacturer in the country and has been in the business since 1794.
Mikov is renowned for producing a wide range of knives, including pocket, folding, fixed blade, hunting, sport, kitchen, and specialty models. The company is particularly known for crafting high-quality everyday knives using premium materials at very affordable prices. This marking knife is no exception to that standard.
The blade of this tool is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, which has been hardened and tempered to a Rockwell hardness of 57. This is the same steel used in many of Mikov's kitchen knives, and it is designed to take and hold a keen edge while resisting corrosion.
The blade measures 5-7/8 inches in length, 1/2 inch in width, and 0.100 inch in thickness. It features a dual-bevel spear point tip, with each bevel ground to a 25-degree angle, resulting in a total included angle of 55 degrees. These bevels are precision-ground on CNC machines, ensuring a consistent and efficient cutting edge.
One notable feature of this marking knife is the laser-cut finger indents, which allow the user to apply pressure closer to the tip, improving control and precision. The dual-bevel design ensures that the knife can mark distinct lines equally well on both the right and left side of a part or guide, leaving crisp lines whether marking with or against the grain, or on end grain.
The knife may require a light stropping to remove a small wire edge, after which it will be razor-sharp and ready for use. It can be used either unhandled or with the addition of wood scales, which can be attached using the two brass pins provided in the kit.
This unhandled Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife kit was made to our specifications by Mikov, a world-class Czech knife maker. Mikov's reputation for quality and affordability is exemplified in this versatile and well-crafted tool, making it an invaluable addition to any woodworker's arsenal.
