Every woodworker's toolbox should include an invaluable marking knife. A good marking knife can produce crisp and well-defined marks on wood, which is essential when laying out precision joinery or transferring measurements. The scribe lines left by a marking knife can also locate and guide chisels and saws.

While numerous well-made marking knives are available, we commissioned this Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife made to our specifications by Mikov, a world-class Czech knife maker. Mikov is currently the largest knife maker in the Czech Republic and has been crafting knives since 1794. They produce a wide range of pocket, folding, fixed blade, hunting, sport, kitchen, and specialty knives, and are best known for making high-quality everyday knives using premium materials at very affordable prices.

This marking knife is no exception. The blade is made from AISI 420 corrosion-resistant stainless steel, hardened and tempered to HRC 57. This is the same steel used in many of Mikov's kitchen knives, designed to take and hold a keen edge while resisting corrosion. The blade measures 5-7/8 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, and 0.030 inch thick, with a dual-bevel spear point tip. The tip is ground to 55 degrees, with a 25-degree angle grind on both bevels, precision-ground on CNC machines.

The laser-cut finger indents on the blade are useful for applying pressure closer to the tip. The dual-bevel design will mark distinct lines equally well on both the right and left side of a part or guide, leaving crisp lines when marking with and against the grain, as well as on end grain. The knife may require only a light stropping to remove a small wire edge, ensuring it is razor-sharp and ready for use.

This unhandled Dual Bevel Spear Point marking knife kit can be used as is or with wood scales attached to create a handle. If a handle is desired, the kit comes with two brass pins to affix the scales to the blade.
