Nestled in the small village of Bystrice in the Czech Republic, Narex has been crafting world-class tools for over a century. The Narex factory, founded in 1919 by Mr. Vaclav Richter, a local blacksmith, initially began producing chisels and gimlets. Today, Narex is renowned for its high-quality, reasonably priced bench chisels.

Despite the significant modernization the Narex factory has undergone in the past century, it still maintains many traditional manufacturing methods. The chisels are produced using old-world drop-forging techniques, which greatly enhance the strength and durability of the steel.

To commemorate its 100th anniversary, Narex has developed a new line of Richter Extra Chisels, named after their founder. This line of chisels represents the finest craftsmanship Narex has achieved in its 100-year history. Crafted from the finest materials available, the Richter Extra chisels have undergone superior heat treatment and been manufactured using the most stringent processes.

The Richter chisel blades are made from the highest quality Chrome Manganese (Cr-V) steel, using traditional drop-forging methods. These blades are then hardened, cryogenically treated, and tempered to achieve a minimal hardness of 62 HRc. The cryogenic treatment, which cools the steel down to −190° C (-310° F) using liquid nitrogen, alters the mechanical properties of the steel at the molecular level, significantly increasing its strength, toughness, and wear resistance.

Following the initial hardening and cryogenic treatment, the blades undergo fine-grinding and polishing, resulting in a mirror-like surface with ultra-thin sides. This allows the Richter Extra chisels to reach into the tightest of spaces, making them the perfect tool for cleaning out dovetails.

The chisel handles are crafted from domestically and responsibly harvested European Ash, known for its strength, toughness, and attractive grain. The ergonomic handles are sanded and then finished with a friction shellac, providing maximum protection, comfort, and control. Solid stainless-steel ferrules protect the handles from splitting, while leather washers absorb the shock of mallet blows.
